Abstract:
The article deals with the transport and logistics schemes that have developed in the Canadian North and the distribution of cargo traffic between the main modes of transport. A special focus of the study is made on the projects of transport and infrastructure building in the Canadian North. The author makes the conclusion that despite the infrastructure gap between the North and the southern provinces of Canada, the distribution of transportation work by modes of transport is similar and the leading positions are occupied by land, and, in particular, road, modes of transport. The assumption of the dependence of the North on sea and air transport for the Canadian North is not true for the whole territory, but only for the territory of Nunavut and the Arctic coast of the Northwest Territories (NWT).
In Canada, the initiative of transport and infrastructure construction are regional and local authorities, who seek funding by submitting to the Federal budget, but also from private including foreign investors. As for potential to reduce transport costs, the most promising projects include ports with year-round navigation (including with icebreaking support) and railways – because due to the relatively low cost, they allow to attract the potential cargo base. However, the Canadian North is dominated by road construction projects, which corresponds to the structure of freight traffic.
