Security of cross-border regions of the Russian Federation in a chaotic and unstable world

Abstract:
Almost half of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation have borders with in recent years. The world has seen many significant events, changes, and shifts previously unimaginable. Hybrid wars have emerged and gained a global dimension; friendly and neutral states become hostile. At this time, which is not peaceful for Russia, it is worth comparing the economic situation in the Russian Federation with that of in neighboring countries. After that, one can ask questions about any potential threats, what to do about them, what forces or resources to use, and when to take action. The results of the author's analysis of several indicators of economic strength of the cross-border regions of the Russian Federation and 11 neighboring countries from 1990 to 2022 are presented. The economic and statistical analysis was carried out on the basis of data from the Federal State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation, the World Bank and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. The results of the study indicate the need to strengthen the economic power of the cross-border constituent entities of the Russian Federation. This is especially important because of the possibility of future aggravation in the region around Russia as well as in neighboring countries.
