Abstract:
The aggravation of problems related to economic inequality in the modern world makes relevant research devoted to the analysis of its causes. This paper analyzes the development of views of foreign and Russian scientists on the reasons for the desire of economic entities to concentrate in the center. The results of the most significant studies in this area are summarized and the main "centripetal" and "centrifugal" forces that determine the formation of the center and periphery and the specifics of their interaction are highlighted. It is shown that early scientific researches were mainly devoted to the analysis of natural and economic factors, such as transport costs and access to resources. More recent researches focuse more on social factors and the quality of the institutional environment.
