The competitive positions of Russian universities in the global education market: summing up the first results and new horizons of Russia superiority initiatives

Abstract:
This research is a continuation of the series of scientific works of the authors devoted to the analysis of problems of assessing the competitiveness of universities in the conditions of transformation of their business models. The article analyzes the criteria for rating the global competitiveness of universities in the context of their evolution and rapid response to external challenges and requests of stakeholders. The results achieved by Russian universities in the institutional and subject rankings of global university competitiveness are presented. The results obtained during the analysis confirm the assumption that the Russian higher education system has international level competence in specific subject areas of research. The world experience of implementing academic excellence initiatives indicates the need for further state support of the strongest universities in Russia, in order to maintain and strengthen their competitive positions in the global education market. It is helpful to study practices of increasing the competitiveness of national higher education systems, allowing to identify key strategic goal of achieving leading positions of Russian universities in the global education market and to reduce the negative impact of imbalances scientific and educational landscape at the national level. The results of the research may be of interest to the heads of higher education institutions, teachers, researchers, postgraduates of Russian and foreign universities, as well as anyone interested in the problems of the universities global competitiveness.
