<abstract xml:lang="en">
The need for the present study stems from recent legislative changes that prohibit companies from using foreign terms in consumer-facing public information (commonly referred to as the anglicism law). Meanwhile, over the past decades, numerous Russian companies have adopted foreign-language brand names for promoting associations with quality and foreign origin. In this context, the study aims to examine how consumers perceive Russian-language versus foreign-language names. The empirical study assessed the perceived characteristics of fictitious brands with foreign language and Russian language names, as well as real brands existing on the Russian market, including recently renamed ones. Results show that consumers perceive fictious foreign language name more positively in terms of image characteristics (modern, prestigious, and expensive) than the Russian language name. Consumers assign lower ratings to the characteristics of renamed brands than to the original foreign brand names. This implies the need for more intensive marketing support to shape attitudes towards renamed brands. Results also indicate the continued tendency towards the positive perception of foreign branding.

<trans-abstract xml:lang="ru">
