<p>The article addresses the issue of the accelerated expansion of renewable energy and the continued commissioning of coal-fired generating capacity in China.
Based on an analysis of statistical data and regulatory documents, it is established that despite growth in overall electricity demand, coal-fired power generation has declined, indicating a structural gap between installed capacity and actual utilization.

It is shown that the high rate of coal capacity additions is driven by the inertia of previously approved projects and the specifics of the capacity payment mechanism.

The article proposes a typology of regional energy transition models, which substantiates the need for a differentiated approach to reducing coal dependence. The cases of the provinces of Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi and Xinjiang are examined. It is concluded that coal-fired generation is gradually transforming from the main source of electricity supply growth into a reserve resource. The article is of interest to researchers in the fields of energy transition, climate policy and the Chinese economy.</p>
