<abstract xml:lang="en">
Digital platforms have become key actors in the modern national economy, deriving profit primarily from the structural features of their business model (network effects, near-zero marginal costs, and control over user data), while existing tax mechanisms do not account for these features. The article identifies fundamental differences between the profit formation models of digital platforms and traditional forms of business. The profit of a digital platform is decomposed into four components, two of which – a market-driven component and structural network rent – are defined as the object of taxation. A two-tier mechanism for taxing the excess profits of digital platforms is proposed: the primary tier is based on segmented financial reporting; and the supplementary tier includes a normative profit indicator and is applied when there are signs of tax base erosion. The proposed mechanism is empirically verified using the financial statements of the three largest Russian transaction platforms for the period 2023–2025. The findings indicate that the excess profits of digital platforms are structural rather than temporary in nature, which requires a specialized tax mechanism.

<trans-abstract xml:lang="ru">
