<abstract xml:lang="en">
The article addresses the challenge of preserving the diagnostic value of academic assignments and students' cognitive autonomy amid the increasing integration of generative AI into the educational process. The authors developed and tested a monetary reasoning simulator — a teaching methodology that uses the variability, inaccuracies, and inconsistencies found in AI-generated responses as material for assessing the quality of students' economic reasoning. The robustness of students' arguments is examined by successively changing a significant condition in a dynamic case study while keeping the remaining initial assumptions constant. This approach makes it possible to determine whether students can identify causal relationships, revise their initial position on justified grounds, and transfer an acquired analytical approach to a new economic context. The article substantiates a structured workflow that combines students' independent work with designated stages of AI use. Specifically, the methodology introduces a procedure for identifying and explaining errors in AI-generated responses, clearly delineates the roles of the student, the instructor, and the AI tool, and establishes criteria for assessing cognitive autonomy, the verifiability of arguments, and the robustness of economic decisions.

The methodology was piloted with 74 students. The average score increased from 68.1 to 78.4. The share of students who verified material facts against primary sources rose from 58.1% to 79.7%, while the proportion of those who successfully identified and explained AI-generated errors and inaccuracies increased from 47.3% to 73.0%. At the final stage, 70.3% of the students successfully completed an individual assignment without using AI.

The findings may be of interest to researchers in digital pedagogy, economics instructors and practitioners in related disciplines, educational methodologists, and academic program directors.

<trans-abstract xml:lang="ru">
