<p>The article analyzes the transformation of the modern economy under the influence of artificial intelligence and big data. Nowadays, we observe the rapid growth of investments in the AI sector and the formation of global digital infrastructures. However, there is the lack of a holistic explanation of exactly how artificial intelligence and big data function as catalysts for changes similar to those that triggered socio-economic shifts in past eras.
In this regard, the article considers artificial intelligence and big data as dynamic factors in a historical and comparative perspective and identifies the mechanisms through which access to AI infrastructures becomes a source of rental payments to their owners from individual users and representatives of the business environment. The empirical base includes an analysis of statistical information on the investment activity of states, data from the financial statements of Microsoft Corporation, and the monetization strategy of the Perplexity AI search service. It has been established that income from providing access to cloud and AI services acquires the character of a regular rent, charged in cash and in the form of providing data for training AI algorithms. The key difference between the modern system of rent dependence and medieval feudalism is shown: rent payers voluntarily integrate into digital ecosystems without realizing the degree of their own attachment to them. Artificial intelligence, therefore, acts as a catalyst for structural change, shifting the center of economic power from traditional capital to control over digital resources. The article is of interest to researchers in the fields of Economics, economic sociology, and digital economy.</p>
