China in the system of international educational migration: scale, directions and structure

At the present stage, international educational migration is becoming an increasingly significant and practically important phenomenon in the global higher education space. The article aims to examine the scale, directions, and structure of international educational migration flows, as well as the specific features of China’s participation in this system. The empirical basis of the study consists of data from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, the Project Atlas database, and official materials of the Ministry of Education of China. The article identifies the leading countries and regions of origin and destination of international students and reveals the key directions of global educational flows. The article demonstrates China’s special position in this system and identifies the two-way nature of its participation, as well as the asymmetry between China’s outgoing and incoming educational flows. The conclusion emphasizes that the specificity of China’s participation is determined not only by the scale of the flows but also by their direction and internal structure.

На современном этапе международная образовательная миграция становится всё более значимым и практически важным явлением в глобальном пространстве высшего образования. Цель настоящего исследования состоит в выявлении масштабов, направлений и структуры потоков международной образовательной миграции, а также особенностей участия Китая в данной системе. Эмпирическую основу исследования составили данные Института статистики Организации Объединённых Наций по вопросам образования, науки и культуры, базы Project Atlas и официальные материалы Министерства образования Китая. В статье определены ведущие страны и регионы происхождения и назначения международных студентов, раскрыты ключевые направления глобальных образовательных потоков. Показано особое место Китая в данной системе, выявлена двусторонняя направленность его участия и асимметрия между исходящими и входящими потоками. В заключении подчёркивается, что специфика участия Китая определяется не только масштабом потоков, но и их направленностью и внутренней структурой
