<abstract xml:lang="en">
The article examines the theoretical developments of Western scientists on issues related to the economic growth of classical Ancient Greece, when the systems of polis democracy flourished.
The authors show a discussion within the framework of modern science about the level of development of market relations among the Hellenes, as well as the reasons for the decline of Ancient Greece, when its economic growth potential was lost for no particularly obvious reason.

Based on the work of Western researchers, the authors have identified links between the economic mentality, political system and economic development of the ancient Greeks. The very fact of economic development in Greece, of course, exists, but its scale is questionable.

Based on the work of Western researchers, the authors consider the very economic nature of the ancient Greek polis, whose role was more productive than consumer. In Western historiography, the emphasis is on property rights as an important institution that was protected by ancient Greek democracy, while becoming an institution that was the main factor in the economic growth of Ancient Greece. The article may be of great interest to specialists in the economic history of ancient societies, as well as to anyone interested in the history of the Ancient World.

<trans-abstract xml:lang="ru">
