At the present time, cities, as the focal points of the principal factors of production, represent the most significant component of the economic space. They exert a profound influence on the socio-economic development of the region. In the majority of countries across the globe, there has been a notable increase in urbanization and agglomeration processes. This phenomenon can be attributed to the growing desire of individuals to reside in large, densely populated settlements. These areas offer a superior quality of life for their inhabitants, with a higher level of well-being and a greater range of opportunities for self-realization. The issue of the deterioration of smaller territories poses a threat to the country's integrity, potentially leading to the emergence of uninhabited and economically stagnant areas. This resulted in the decision to focus the article on examining the role of small towns and the social contradictions present within them. To this end, the article presents a comparative analysis of the social and economic development of small towns in the Northwestern and Central Federal Districts. To achieve this objective, an evaluation of the socio-economic development level of small towns in the selected regions was conducted; key issues were identified; and prospective avenues for regional development were presented. The scientific novelty of this research lies in the refinement of the methodology for assessing the socio-economic development level of small towns and the formulation of promising development pathways for these towns in the context of evolving economic conditions.
В настоящее время города, как центры сосредоточения основных факторов производства, выступают важнейшим элементом экономического пространства, во многом именно они определяют социально-экономическое развитие региона. В большинстве стран мира наблюдается нарастание процессов урбанизации и агломерирования, что обусловлено желанием людей жить в крупных населенных пунктах, поскольку в них, гораздо выше уровень и качество жизни населения, чем в сельских территориях, а также имеется больше возможностей для самореализации. Проблема деградация малых территорий подрывает целостность страны, что может привести к появлению пустующих незаселенных пространств, уничтожению точек экономического роста в малых городах. Это обусловило выбор цели статьи – исследование роли малых городов и социальных противоречий в них (на примере регионов СЗФО и ЦФО). Для достижения цели была проведена оценка уровня социально-экономического развития малых городов исследуемых территорий, выявлены ключевые проблемы и представлены направления развития в пространственном развитии российских регионов. Научную новизну исследования составляет совершенствование подхода к определению уровня социально-экономического развития малых городов, а также формирование перспективных направлений их развития в изменяющихся экономических условиях
