<abstract xml:lang="en">
The article discusses the controversial issues of the microfinance effectiveness. A review of existing approaches to defining and evaluating the effectiveness of microfinance organizations is presented.
The need to consider the social impact of microfinance is due to the presence of a number of problems in the current practice of providing microloans to small and medium businesses. The article shows that the heterogeneity of borrower firms makes it difficult for managers of microfinance organizations to make decisions about providing financial assistance to a particular borrower. This, in turn, leads to a false positive performance of microfinance. Based on a systematic review and critical analysis of the literature, the author's approach to measuring the social effectiveness of microfinance is presented.

The factors of the institutional environment and characteristics of companies influencing it are revealed. The results of this article can be used by managers of microfinance organizations to make functional decisions on the issuance of microloans to small and medium-sized businesses, as well as to become a starting point for qualitatively new research on the effectiveness of microfinance in terms of its social purpose.

<trans-abstract xml:lang="ru">
