<abstract xml:lang="en">
China's current economic success rests on the foundation laid by the economic reforms that were carried out from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. This article examines the issues of China's economic reforms from four points of view: motivation for change, the chosen model of institutional transformation, dependence on the initially chosen path, and evaluation of the reform effectiveness. Thanks to the gradualist institutional changes, the market economy has been successfully implemented in China.

Gradually implemented policies and experiments at the local level, including the Rural Areas Surrounding Cities program, ensured the progress of reforms according to plan, without causing violent social upheavals and significant losses of national wealth.

A lot of scientists have analyzed China's economic reforms from the point of view of neo-institutionalism. This article examines the influence of the pre-transition state on the path of economic transformation. The article can be recommended to students, academic staff, and researchers studying China's economic reforms from the late 1970s to the early 1990s and their implementation path.

<trans-abstract xml:lang="ru">
